Denne romanen fra 1988 er blitt en merkestein i kampen for ytringsfriheten etter at det iranske regimet utlyste sin fatwa over forfatteren i 1989. Den har en kaleidoskopisk handling. En tidlig vintermorgen blir en kapret jumbojet sprengt i luften over Den engelske kanal. Gjennom skydekket faller to personer: Gabreel Farishta, Indias legendariske filmstjerne, og den mer beskjedne skuespilleren og britiske statsborgeren Saladin Chamcha. Som ved et mirakel skylles de opp på en snødekket engelsk strandbredd. Men snart viser det seg at de har gjennomgått merkverdige forandringer...
